ESP32 at the Heart of Nuvia’s Energy Management Platform
Reporting from Shanghai, China
Dec 29, 2020
Nuvia’s ESP32-powered, smart thermostats have taken the Turkish market by storm.
Nuvia Intelligent Energy Technologies (Nuvia) was founded in 2013 in Istanbul, Turkey, with the vision to contribute to efficient energy consumption and a green future for all. In fact, Nuvia’s mission is to contribute to the acceleration of the world’s transition to sustainable energy use by designing smart-home products that combine power efficiency and user comfort. To this end, the company’s core team comprises experts with extensive academic and professional experience in the fields of energy management and the Internet of Things.
Over the years, Nuvia’s all-in-one Energy Management Platform has become popular with HVAC manufacturers and public utility companies. At the same time, Nuvia’s Cosa brand is highly sought-after by end-users of smart-home applications.
All Cosa appliances, e.g. smart thermostats, smart radiator valves and various heating controllers, are powered by ESP32. Cosa appliances allow users to control their home’s temperature throughout the year, with a single device connected to a smartphone application and Cloud services. Cosa appliances bring savings of up to 30% in energy bills, while also improving users’ comfort and reducing CO2 emissions.
Furthermore, Nuvia’s all-in-one Energy Management Platform is designed around an ESP32 module, due to the high level of integration, power efficiency, strong performance, RF design, low environmental impact and cost of Espressif’s flagship SoC. More specifically, Espressif’s powerful ESP32-WROOM-32E combines Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (Legacy and Low Energy) connectivity, while it is complemented by a PCB antenna and 4 MB of external SPI flash. ESP32-WROOM-32E is ideal for low-power sensor networks, like the ones used on Nuvia’s Energy Management Platform. At the same time, Nuvia’s subsystems are interconnected with ESP-NOW. This is a protocol developed by Espressif, which enables multiple devices to communicate with one another without using Wi-Fi. ESP-NOW functions similarly to the low-power 2.4GHz wireless connectivity (pairing) that is often deployed by certain computer peripherals. The connection provided by ESP-NOW is secure and peer-to-peer, with no handshake being required.
Nuvia Intelligent Energy Technologies has established a well-respected position in Turkey’s Residential Energy Management market, with local and international sales, while preserving the flexibility of a startup company. Its estimated market share of smart thermostats in Turkey is currently higher than 70%. Cosa appliances are now present in 22,000 households and, since 2013, Nuvia’s all-in-one Energy Management Platform has sold more than 200,000 units in total. The company has achieved ISO 9001 certification for meeting customer objectives and providing consistent quality. It has also achieved ISO 14001 certification for offering products and services with an improved environmental impact.
